Distressed Wood Flooring

A newer option in hardwood surfaces is distressed wood flooring. While there are different methods of achieving this look, it basically gives the surface an old world look that makes the surface appear well worn. Whether a prefinished product or a bare surface is selected, this look can be done in the factory, before it is purchased.  Another similar type of distressed wood is hand scraped flooring.

Many different types of materials are suitable for this type of look.  Cheap bamboo flooring is a naturally grainy material, so a weathered look makes it appear more like it would in its natural environment. When processed in the factory, the nobs or round marks from new growth are visible in the individual planks and are slightly darker than the rest of the grain.

In a hardwood, such as hickory, white oak flooring or Brazilian teak flooring, getting a distressed wood floors look is achieved by using a wire brush across the top of each piece of plank flooring. This can be done with prefinished hardwood as well as unfinished products. Another procedure is one of hand scraping. This provides a more unique look, as each plank is done individually. The choice may depend on what you prefer in your home. For an entirely rustic look, the hand scraping will likely be a better choice.

For a bit more of a uniform look, the wire brush method is widely used. Usually this is done on a machine, so each plank will have the same marks in the same place. This is probably a better choice for a cottage look or a room with plenty of antique furniture. It also works well in kitchens and bedrooms. The advantage of the brush method is its lower cost. Using a machine is less time consuming and requires much less, in terms of labor.

For those who are woodworking experts, another option is to install unfinished planks and do the distressing procedure by hand. However, this is very time consuming and depending on the size of the room, may take too long for the desired look. Prefinished hardwood flooring products with this look are available in many different types of woods, as well as many shades or stains, so you can have just the right tone and appearance of visible wear.

If you are not sure what the wood plank flooring will look like when they get home, you may want to visit a flooring showroom or visit some model homes. Seeing the finished product in various home environments gives you a better picture of how the product will look in your space. Some manufacturers may also let you visit their sites, to see what is available. This will not give you as good a picture of how the final product will look.

Prices vary, depending on which procedure is used and the type of product you select. Hickory is more expensive than the others, with a typical price of over $6 per square foot. On the other hand, teak products can be purchased for just over $2 per square foot. Both are elegant, but provide an entirely different look and feel to a room.
