Choosing and Installing Engineered Wood Plank Flooring

Choosing the right engineered wood plank flooring can be a bit difficult as there are so many different colors and brand names out on the market.  Below are a few tips to keep in mind that should help you to choose the right flooring:

- Choose something that matches the furniture you already have.  Unless you are going to replace some or all of your furniture, make sure the flooring you get matches well with any wooden furniture in the room.  If the furniture clashes with the floor, the furniture may look a little out of place, regardless of how nice the wooden flooring is.

- Choose a lighter shade of brown if you want the room to have a brighter look.  Darker flooring will make the room look darker.  As a side benefit to darker flooring, if you have a lot of people walking in and out of the room a dark brown or black floor will hide the dirt better and help the room to look cleaner.

- Choose something that has a good warranty on it.  Some brand names offer a lifetime residential warranty.  This type of warranty covers home install that is not in a business or office setting. This kind of warranty is helpful to have in case the some unforeseen defect in the flooring surfaces

You can buy your flooring from either Home Depot or an online retailer.  If you buy it online, you may find the prices are slightly cheaper but keep in mind that you will also likely have to pay for the shipping.  It is usually easier to get what you need from a regular store, unless you are looking for an exact type of engineered wood plank flooring and the stores in your area do not stock it.  If this is the case, it should not be hard to find what you are looking for online and it is simple and extremely easy to order it from any retailer selling it via the internet.

As far as installing the plank flooring goes, be sure to measure the area so that you do not get too little or too much wood plank flooring.  Planks come in square feet so it is helpful to know the exact measurements of the flooring you’re going to install it on. It helps to get just a few square feet more than your exact needs, just in case.  While you can install the flooring yourself if you feel confident doing so, it is a lot of work as you will likely have to tear out the old flooring to install the plank flooring on the cement.  If you do decide to do it yourself, then make sure the floor is clean and completely level.  Then put the poly film over the floor and make sure to run it several inches up the wall as well.  You will also need to put duct tape over the seams before starting to lay the planks down.  Make sure you have the special wood glue you need, a circular saw to cut the planks, and a hammer to hammer them down after the glue has been applied.  After you install it, you can begin to enjoy your engineered wood plank flooring!
